Problem
The project required the replacement of an existing timber bridge structure with new precast
bridge sections along the same alignment over environmentally sensitive Big Gulch Creek while
maintain existing access to the Mukilteo Waste Water facility. The site was only accessible for
conventional truck and trailer and the placement of the precast sections required a much larger
crane than could access the site.
Solution
A plan was implemented to separate the working area from the existing creek flow. Working
with the utility district, New West devised a plan to create a detour alignment for traffic
alongside the existing timber bridge and relocate the existing bridge to the detour alignment.
New West coordinated with Sicklesteel crane to utilize a crane that could be mobilized in
segments and reassembled onsite.
Results
Once the detour approaches were constructed New West relocated the existing timber bridge to
the detour alignment and re-opened it for full use within 6 hours of the shutdown. The new
bridge segments were delivered and set into place in one working shift. Big Gulch Creek was
protected and did not experience any impacts from construction.
